Radios Seagull & Caroline Party on a Lightship
Saturday, 13 October 2012
Past and present staff and supporters of the relatively new Radio Seagull and the legendary Radio Caroline gathered for a party on board Light-Vessel 21 (LV21), a lightship (a lighthouse on a ship), now serving as an arts and entertainment venue, berthed at Chatham Docks, Kent, UK.
Maybe you have heard of the film “The Boat that Rocked”, also titled (e.g. in the USA) “Pirate Radio”, about maverick pioneer pop radio broadcasters from a ship at sea in the 1960’s. Well these people are the real deal, from the offshore pirate radio eras of the 1960s, 1979’s and 1980’s. Nowadays they broadcast legally, mostly on-line, and also when possible, via traditional transmitters. Seagull has a Dutch license to broadcast from their own ship (which is likewise a lightship, LV8), while Caroline looks to the UK Government to demonstrate a similarly positive attitude.
The party focused around and was (as I understand it) mainly organised by Mandy Marton, to celebrate her 50th year on this planet, along with Radio Caroline hero-supporters since the offshore age, Albert & Georgina Hood, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
